Greetings Happy People,
There are 58 Toastmasters clubs in the Las Vegas Valley. There are 176 Toastmaster clubs in District 33 – covering southern Nevada and central California. There are over 12,000 Toastmasters clubs worldwide. This mission of this organization is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.
Throughout the 85 years of this organization, millions of people from all walks of life benefitted from joining Toastmasters. They became great leaders, great speakers, and great individuals. There are millions more that are about to take that first step and check out clubs that fits them. If you are considering joining a Toastmasters club, my best recommendation is to check out as many Toastmaster clubs as you can.
Each club has their own personality. There are clubs for single people. There are clubs based on political parties. There are professional clubs. There are church clubs. Heck!! There are clubs that are simply for the community!!
Checking out a Toastmasters club is just like trying on shoes. You want one that not only fits you comfortably, but also one that is able to make you feel and look good. Whether you want to become a professional speaker or just improve your communication skills, please make sure you select a Toastmasters club that meets YOUR needs. There is nothing more disheartening than to join a club that doesn’t because it will result in a lose-lose situation. We ALL want to be in that WIN-WIN situation and joining the right club is a WIN-WIN situation for everyone!!
There are Toastmasters club that meet weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. There are clubs that meet on one of the seven days of the week. There are clubs that either meet in the morning, lunchtime, or evenings. To know where and when to check out a Toastmasters Club in your community, all you have to do are the following steps:
1. Go to the Toastmasters website (http://www.toastmasters.org)
2. At the left portion of the site, click “Find” to find a club near you
3. When you click “Find,” it will take you to another page. There you can find clubs based on where you live. All you have to do is type in the location and the best times you can attend.
4. When you are done, click “Find.”
There you will find all the clubs you can find in your neighborhood. All you have to do now is check them out. It would help to contact the person to get a feel on what the club is like. After that, you are ready to check out which Toastmasters club is right for you!! Who knows, you will find a more than a club, but also a great relationship with the members, community, and Toastmasters!!

What's YOUR Next Challenge?
Greetings Happy People,
As I walked outdoors, I took in the weather, looked around my environment, and realized that somewhere out there many challenges wait for me.
If you read “Off To the Market,” you would know that I am about to step into a challenge that will be rewarding. Aside from that, I am also looking at more challenges I want to do. No matter if it involves work, personal, or something else, there is something in my gut that is telling me to not only find those challenges, but face them head on. Whatever they are, I will be ready.
No matter how big or small, it is good to have challenges in life. It can not only put many principles to the test, but also determine what type of person one really is. There is no better feeling than to overcome a challenge in your life. The victory, the triumph, and the self satisfaction of accomplishing what once seemed impossible. It is quite exhilarating!!
Where would the world be without challenges? I do not know, but I can only imagine that it will not be good. If we never faced any challenges in life, we would all live pretty dull lives. It is like walking on a flat road to nowhere. Yes you are walking, but where are you going? For a certain period of time, walking this path can be tiresome. At a certain point a person has to make two decisions on how to deal with this path: either stay on this track and wither OR just get off of it and try something different.
Many people would choose the latter because they want something new in their lives. Others wouldn’t because they often worry or fear about what is on the other side. Those uncertainties can easily turn into unnecessary barriers. There are other people that get complacent in where they are. These people wonder why should I go somewhere else when I got something good right here? That complacency can be seen as a false feeling bringing one down. A world without challenges is not really a world I want to live in. What about you?
What is the best way to take on a challenge? All you have to do is look at it, have some faith, and take that first step. It may sound easier to say than do, but give it a try. You will never know unless you give it a try. Whether you come out on top or fall down, at least you are better than the person that never tried at all.

GONG!!
Greetings Happy People,
When was the last time you experienced fear? For me, it happened last Saturday. Before I stepped up to the stage, I had my concerns. After I stepped down, I really had nothing to worry about. It was all in my head!!
Last Saturday evening, Dana and I were hanging out with a few friends from my high school. We were talking, laughing, and having a great time. We were there for two reasons. The first one was to celebrate one of my friend’s birthdays and the other was to witness a black belt ceremony for Karate Karaoke.
What exactly is Karate Karaoke? It is a place where you not only have the chance to go up to the stage and sing your choice of songs, but also do this in a way where you get credited via belt status. The more songs you sing the higher belt level you get. For example, I am midway through my yellow belt. A few more songs and I will become an orange belt.
That night, they had a black belt ceremony for one of the Karate Karaoke regulars. The DJ was dressed up in his karate garb. They also had one of those miniature gongs. The guy that received the black belt credit had the chance to gong anybody he wanted to. This automatically stops the person on stage from singing. Instead, the DJ would give them a free drink coupon and a bumper sticker that said “I Got Gonged at Karate Karaoke.”
Before I had the chance to sing my second song of the night, I saw other singers get gonged off the stage. Being the first time I ever saw this made me feel nervous. When it was my time to go up the stage, I went up there looking at that gong and the guy holding the stick. With great trepidation, I sang the Johnny Cash song “A Boy Named Sue.” I was looking at the gong throughout that song. As you can tell, this was not my best performance. It was so bad that Johnny Cash would have come up to me and said, “Don’t you ever sing that song again you hear?” When it was over, I breathe a sigh of relief.
When it was Dana’s turn to go upstage, she was going to sing a Dolly Parton song. Within a few seconds, she was gonged. Did she have any fears about being gonged? Not really. She just wanted to get the bumper sticker and a drink for me!! WOW!! Here I was worrying about how bad I was going to do on stage and my honey went up the stage for a whole different reason!! When I thought about it in that perspective, the gong did not seem so harmless!! For the rest of the night, we all continued to have fun and watch a few more people get gonged. The night did start AND end on a pretty good note!!
Fear is a funny thing happy people. Just when you thought things would go one way, they turn towards another direction. We all experience fears on different levels. How we handle it IS up to us. Are we going to let our fears keep us from what we want to do? Or are we going to overcome them and be better than we were before? We can only answer that for ourselves!! Until then, all we can do is face the music and experience our own “gongs” along the way!! When it is all said and done, we will be better for it.

Off to the Market
Greetings Happy People,
Last weekend, I attended the District 33 Toastmasters Spring Conference in Modesto, California. Like many District Conferences in the past, this one was awesome!! I heard some outrageous Tall Tales and amazing International Speeches. I also listened to some great presentations about finding that next speech to write. I also had a chance to take part in some karaoke singing. One can say that the events at this conference were worth the 8 hour drive. Yes I did say 8 hours (from Las Vegas to Modesto).
That Saturday afternoon, a business meeting took place. Two important things happened at that meeting: The Las Vegas Toastmasters Community added a brand new Division AND new District 33 Officers were elected. When it came to electing District Officers, the following positions were elected – The Top 3 (District Governor, Lt. Governor of Education & Training, and Lt. Governor of Marketing) AND the Division Governors. When the overall elections were finished, I was elected the District 33 Lt. Governor of Marketing for the 2010-2011 Toastmaster year.
What is a Lt. Governor of Marketing (or LGM)? This is the third highest ranking position in District 33 Toastmasters - behind District Governor of Lt. Governor of Education and Training (or LGET). The LGM is responsible for helping create new clubs in the District. Additionally, the LGM also assists rebuilding clubs by providing numerous ways in helping a Toastmaster club grow – via Club Coaching, Membership Building efforts, and Open houses.
The LGM also works with the District Governor and the LGET to set and achieve goals that will make us DISTINGUISHED on ALL levels. We also support Clubs, Areas, and Divisions by ensuring top-notch quality that promotes growth within the whole District. It does not matter where or who you are, growth is very important!! Without growth, how can we better ourselves?
Now that I am elected to this position, what am I doing to prepare for July 1st – the start of my term?
Somewhere in my mind, I keep hearing the following math equation:
100% INTENTION + 0% MECHANISM = 100% RESULTS
What does that mean? As long as you have the intention set, you can use any means to get to your goals. There is no one-track thinking when it comes to reaching a goal. Instead, whatever means that can be used WILL be used!! That simple equation helped me have a VERY successful year as a Division Governor.
Being a sports minded person, I am focusing on building a strong offense and stronger defense. In creating both offense and defense, certain plays have to be drawn out on both sides of the ball. All of these simple razzle-dazzle plays can be placed in a “playbook.”
Establishing the plays will also lead to something that I plan to do for the 2010-2011 Toastmaster year. There is something that also helped me with the leadership roles I held in the past that I will do for the upcoming year. Would you like to know what it is? Really….would you like to know what it is? Well, the one thing I plan to do for the 2010-2011 Toastmaster year as the LGM is………
HAVE FUN BABY!!!
That’s right!! I plan to enjoy myself for the upcoming year!! When you are in that positive frame of mind, nothing can stop you!! It is a good feeling that will transcend into any action one can do!! It boggles me that some people are not able to see this concept. Always being too serious about anything they do – including breathing. It’s not rocket science happy people!! When one person gets into that frame of mind, lots of good action can come from it!! All you got to do is think positive, feel good, and work that magic!!
I am looking forward to an awesome Toastmaster year!! I am looking forward to working with the Happy People of District 33!! I am ALSO looking forward to see this District grow on ALL levels. If things go the way they are, it will be one heck of a year coming up!! And you can take that to the bank!! :o)

Herb and Mike
Greetings People,
The following message I have for you is very difficult to write.
It is about two gentlemen that made major impacts in their respective communities. It is about two gentlemen that are now making major impacts where they are right now. For many years, they touched lots of lives and influenced many people. Today, I write about two amazing gentlemen: Herb Wells and Mike Wilson.
What can I say about these gentlemen? So many things.
Herb Wells was a powerful influence at the Engineering College in UNLV. Through the advice of former President Herbert Hoover and his son, Herb moved to Las Vegas to begin his engineering career. After working for a couple of engineering companies, Herb was asked to teach surveying class at a new school known back then as the University of Nevada, Reno - Las Vegas campus. That school later became UNLV.
From the school's conception in 1957 to earlier this year, Herb taught many students who later made an impact in the world. He had plenty of stories to tell about his life and experiences. He also gave advice to different students that was or was not related to engineering. Even when he "retired" back in 1997, he continued to share his wisdom by continuing to teach for another 13 years. Once asked, what he would miss the most about his experiences at UNLV, he simply replied "The students, of course!!"
When I was a civil engineering student, Herb was one of my advisors. He not only told me which courses I should take, but gave me different insights on them. After hearing one of my presentations that was less than "stellar," He suggested I joined something called Speechcraft - an 8 week course based on meetings that were done by Toastmasters International. From the first week, I knew that it was something that I was going to do for a long time.
When I heard that Herb had passed a month ago, I could only think of the lives he has touched for 7 decades. Without him, the engineering program at UNLV would never be the same. When I attended his memorial service last week, I saw many professors, students, alumni, family members, and other people outside of the engineering community. As we all shared stories about this man, one thing is for certain. Herb may be in another place, but his legacy will live for many years.
When Herb introduced me to Toastmasters 15 years ago, I knew that it would be something I love to do for a very long time. From then to now, I met many people within this organization. Some were beginners, others were seasoned. No matter how many people there were in this organization, no Toastmaster can make an impact quite like Mike Wilson.
It was yesterday afternoon and I was with a group of Area Governors preparing for a Division Governor's roast later that month. I checked my phone and noticed I got a message from a past District Governor. When I called her, she told me about what happened. When I first heard the news, it hit me so hard that I am still recovering from the shock as I write to you people today. Then my thoughts go to the wonderful memories I had with Mike.
If you want to know the meaning of a Toastmaster that is a true giant, look no further than Mike Wilson. He was not only a District Governor and a Distinguished Toastmaster, but also a mentor, a leader, and simply an amazing guy to be around. With his wife Kay, you can consider them to be a power couple in the Toastmasters community.
For many years, Mike has been involved with Toastmasters International. It does not matter if it was on a member, club, area, division, district, regional, or worldwide level, Mike has touched many lives in this organization. He gaves presentation that were upbeat. He also gave presentations that were also heartfelt. The one presentation I can remember was the one he recently gave at an Area Contest about fathers and sons. It moved me to the point when I thought about the times I spent with my ol' man.
Mike also took the time to help as many people as he can. No matter who you were, he was always willing to lend a helping hand. I can still remember the time when Mike, Adella Logan, and myself were sitting at a Starbucks discussing a game plan to create a new Toastmasters club. He did not only discussed the game plan, but he also took part by helping with the demo meeting and giving his first chartering party keynote presentation. This was one of many examples on the helpfulness of Mr. Wilson.
And when one thinks of Mike, how can one NOT forget about the yearly barbecue roasts that took place at the house he shared with his beautiful wife Kay? Every May, there would be a Division Governor's roast at their house. First, Mike would roast the food for everyone to enjoy. Then the Area Governors would "roast" the outgoing Division Governors. No matter the year, great times were had by all at Kay and Mike's place. This shows the welcoming spirit Mike had for people.
When I think of Mike Wilson, these are just a few things that come to my mind. Like many people inside and outside of Toastmasters, I am sure that more great memories can be shared about this man. Simliar to Herb, Mike's legacy will live for many years to come.
As I conclude this post, I give my condlences to the families and friends of Herb Wells and Mike Wilson. It is difficult to think that they are no longer with us. It is easier to realize that wherever they are, they are making their impact to more people than one can truly imagine. God bless you Herb and Mike!! Your legacies will live through the people lives you touched!! You two have done well!! Thank you.

Every May, there would be a Division Governor's roast at their house. First, Mike would roast the food for everyone to enjoy. Then the Area Governors would "roast" the outgoing Division Governors. No matter the year, great times were had by all at Kay and Mike's place. This shows the welcoming spirit Mike had for people.
When I think of Mike Wilson, these are just a few things that come to my mind. Like many people inside and outside of Toastmasters, I am sure that more great memories can be shared about this man. Simliar to Herb, Mike's legacy will live for many years to come.
As I conclude this post, I give my condlences to the families and friends of Herb Wells and Mike Wilson. It is difficult to think that they are no longer with us. It is easier to realize that wherever they are, they are making their impact to more people than one can truly imagine. God bless you Herb and Mike!! Your legacies will live through the people lives you touched!! You two have done well!! Thank you.
